Tutorial Tuesday | Rodeo Beach

Short post today…

Roughly a month ago I was in San Francisco for a commercial shoot.  The night before, I headed across the Golden Gate Bridge into Sausalito and the Marin Headlands.  Once you wind back in a ways you come to one of the coolest places… Rodeo Beach.  You may remember the lagoon, the bridge and the log from prior posts.

The tutorial part of Tutorial Tuesday?  When shooting on the beach near the water, extend the lowest legs of your tripod about 12 or so inches.  Then jamb the legs deep into the wet sand just beyond the high water mark (you may have to watch the waves for a minute or so to get a better feel).  This does two things, 1) with the lower legs out you keep the sand and saltwater out of your leg’s hinges or lock points, and 2) you create a much more stable base for when the waves come in and wash around the legs.

I couldn’t decide which of these two to post, so I did both.  I will get around to processing the ones I shot with the 10 stop ND filter at some point in the future…

The second shot has a nice amount of drama thanks to the water in the frame. That one gets my favorite vote :)

Nice work Rick – I think I like the first one out of the two, and a great tip to boot. I’ll be heading to an island in a few weeks, so that’s certainly helpful!

I really like both, but think I have to give the first one the nod.
