While I was in Orlando a few weeks back, I decided to head over to Universal City Walk® to grab a few photos. So around 8:30 or so I headed over, paid to park, grabbed my back pack, threw the camera/tripos combo over my shoulder and headed in. I made it as far as the rotunda before I was approached by a police officer and a security guard. After a brief discussion, we had another security guard, and after some more discussion we had the head of security now in the mix (all of whom were extremely professional and courteous). There was no way I was getting in with my gear. I pleaded with them to grant me a tripod pass, special permission or some type of presidential pardon… after all it was just pictures. They finally committed to reviewing my request with media relations and the legal team the next morning. Needless to say, I was not holding my breath.
Fast forward to 4 PM or so the next day and my phone rings. “Hi this is Rick.” “Hi Rick, this is ______ with Universal calling. Great news… you have special permission to shoot and use a tripod. We are excited for you to enjoy the park and make some great photos.”
I was totally blown away. I finished up what I was doing, and once again began the trek into the park. After a minor hiccup at the bag check, I was In Like Flynn and began shooting. The nice thing was that it was a cold and somewhat rainy night with lots of sprinkles making for more sparse than usual crowds. I had a great time and want to extend my thanks to Universal for allowing me access to their great park.
This was one of the last images I made that night, but was one of the first I processed. I loved both the Forest Gump movie and book, and couldn’t wait to slap this bad boy up on the blog. Hope you like it too!
